A dog’s physical and mental well-being is directly linked to how much they play and exercise. And for most of our canine companions, chew toys are a significant part of their playtime. Not only do they offer a solution to teething woes, but they also engage their senses and can be a big stress relief. Despite the array of options available in pet stores, crafting homemade chew toys for your dogs can be an engaging, cost-effective, and rewarding project.

Materials You Can Use

The first step in crafting homemade chew toys for dogs is to identify suitable raw materials. Some of the best materials for DIY dog chew toys are old rags, t-shirts, jeans, tennis balls, and PVC piping. These materials are not only robust and durable but also safe for dogs.

Denim is a particularly sturdy fabric and can withstand strong bites even from a big dog. If you have some worn-out jeans lying around, do not throw them. You can repurpose them into a perfect chew toy that your dog will love.

On the contrary, avoid any materials that can be swallowed, with sharp edges, loose small parts, or are toxic in nature.

Rope Toy

One of the simplest homemade dog toys to make is a pull rope. This toy is great for playing tug of war or just for the dog to chew on and have fun. Here’s how you can create your own:

Material Needed: You will need three strips of an old t-shirt or similar fabric, about one to two inches wide and 20 inches long.

Directions: Gather the three strips and tie a knot at one end. Then start braiding the three strips together until you reach the other end, and secure it with another knot. Your homemade tug-of-war toy is ready.

Treat-Filled Tennis Ball Toy

With nothing more than a tennis ball and some dog treats, you can create a homemade chew toy that also works well as a puzzle toy.

Material Needed: Old tennis ball, kibble or small-sized dog treats.

Directions: Simply cut a small slit into the tennis ball. Into this hole, you can stuff the ball with the dog treats. Your dog will have a lot of fun trying to determine how to get the treats out, keeping them at this for hours.

DIY Bottle Toy

A used empty water bottle can make a perfect chew toy for a dog. Its crackly sound when chewed and lightweight nature keeps the dog fascinated.

Material Needed: Empty clean plastic bottle and an old sock.

Directions: Place the plastic bottle inside the sock, tying a knot at the end so the bottle doesn’t slide out.

Braided Tug Toy

Expanding on the idea of a simple rope toy, you can create this more involved tug toy.

Material Needed: Three old t-shirts or similar material.

Directions: Cut five strips from each color of t-shirt, each strip about an inch wide and 18-24 inches long depending on the size of the t-shirt. Gather all the strips and tie a knot at the top, leaving a few inches of strips above the knot. Divide the strips into three sections depending upon their color. Start braiding like you would braid hair until you get to the end, and then tie a knot to secure.

Dog Chew Toy From PVC Pipe

Material Needed: A piece of PVC pipe, PVC end caps, and dog treats.

Directions: Place the PVC pipe upright, insert the kibble or treats, and then close both ends with the PVC caps. Make sure to use a size of pipe that is appropriate for your dog – larger for big dogs, smaller for small dogs.

Keep in mind that while homemade dog chew toys are a fantastic way to exercise and engage your pet, every dog is different. Keep a close eye on them while they are engaging with homemade toys, especially the first few times they’re playing with a new one.

Remember, regular cleaning of these toys is essential as they often become breeding grounds for bacteria. Rinse them thoroughly at intervals and let them dry completely before you give it back to your beloved pet.

Making chew toys for your dog can be an enjoyable task. Not only does it allow you to repurpose materials that otherwise may have been thrown away, but it also provides you with a way to customize your dog’s toys to fit their specific needs and interests. Plus, your pooch will surely love the time and thought you put into creating something special just for them.
